Why Getting An Allergy Test Done Is Helpful

Most food allergies arise during childhood, but they can develop at any age. It is unclear why, but some adults develop allergies to foods they normally eat without issue. A child may outgrow a food allergy, but adults are less likely to do so. If you suddenly develop an allergy to your favorite food, that can be difficult to deal with, whatever your age.

What do you do if you believe you or your child is allergic to something?

The first thing that you need to do is to confirm what is causing the problem – it might be a specific food or ingredient, it might be a whole food group, it could be an allergy to pets or something else in the environment. You also need to find out whether it is an allergy or an intolerance, as these are two different things but often confused.

Some of the main food allergens include:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Sesame

Of course, you can be allergic to just about anything and it can be difficult to narrow down. An at-home allergy testing kit from AllergenIQ can make the process a little faster, a little easier and take much of the stress away from it. Not only will you find out what you are allergic to, but with the expert help of a Board certified Allergist, you will gain a deeper understanding of the issue and look at ways to manage it – one of these being whether you need to give up your favorite food or not. All at-home Allergy Tests need to be ordered and managed by a board certified Allergist who can use your clinical history and their expertise to properly interpret the test and guide you on your next best steps.

Whether you do have to give up eating a particular food completely is something that cannot be answered in a general post about allergies. It is entirely dependent on what you are allergic to, the severity of your allergy, your medical history and whether there are any treatments or preventative measures available. This is what sets AllergenIQ apart from other at-home allergy testing kits –  we have an expert team on hand to give you this information and help you to manage your allergy in a way that has the least negative impact on your diet, your life and your health.

While not all allergies for all people can be treated, some children and adults may be a candidate for Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (Food SLIT). Food Sublingual Immunotherapy (allergy drops) for foods,is a treatment for children and adults to safely build your tolerance in cas of an accidental exposure to your allergen occurs. For some children and adults, it may help them to eat their allergic food without any allergic reaction. Whether these drops are appropriate for you or your child is something that the doctor that you consult with from AllergenIQ once you have received your results will be able to tell you. For some individuals, Food Sublingual immunotherapy means that they no longer need to worry about cross contamination. For some, it can mean that they continue to eat their favorite foods without the worry of a reaction.

Does an allergy mean that you have to give up your favorite food? Unfortunately, in many situations yes. In others, it can be made more manageable with various options as discussed with your allergy expert. The most important thing is knowledge and an understanding of your allergy – and that is exactly what you will get when you take an AllergenIQ at-home allergy test and speak with our Board Certified Allergists.
